Schroeder Cemetery in Dundee

Interesting news and controversy over the sale of the Schroeder Cemetery in Dundee.

The Schroeder Cemetery was purchased recently by a developer.  Evidentially, the cemetery is a long-lost treasure, probably tied to early pioneers of the area.  There are no visible boundaries to the cemetery and no gravestones exist.  The question on the table is:  are there still bodied buried there?  Local historians are trying to make that determination, as there may be plans to develop the land.

Cemetery Trip This Weekend!

The timing of the Graveyard Rabbit Association could not be better.  One of the reasons I chose the Chicagoland area was because that's where I'm from.  My mom's side of the family settled in Chicago, while my dad's side settled in Aurora.  Oddly enough, both sides converged in the suburbs.

At any rate, I had planned to visit the cemeteries in which my relatives are buried.  And that's exactly what me and my husband are doing this weekend.  Following is a list of cemeteries we will be visiting (hope we can cover them all in two days!!!):

  • Elm Lawn Cemetery, Elmhurst
  • Irving Park Cemetery, Chicago
  • Acadia Park-Belle Plaine Cemetery, Chicago
  • Chapel Hill Garden West Cemetery, Oak Brook Terrace
  • Elmwood Park Cemetery, River Grove
  • Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Hillside
  • Oakridge Cemetery, Hillside
  • Waldheim Cemetery, Forest Park
  • Forest Home Cemetery, Forest Park
  • Lincoln Memorial Park, Aurora
  • Riverside Cemetery, Montgomery
  • Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Aurora

I can't wait!

Welcome!

Welcome to the Chicagoland Graveyard Rabbit blog! This new blog is for my membership in The Association of Graveyard Rabbits. What in the world is the Association of Graveyard Rabbits? It's a new group formed by Terry Thornton to promote "the historical importance of cemeteries, grave markers, and the family history to be learned from a study of burial customs, burying grounds, and tombstones."

It's quite an interesting prospect and I'm honored to have been invited to participate. This blog will focus on the Chicagoland-area, which is one of my bigger research areas (where I am from orginally). I've also created The Graveyard Rabbit of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois to cover the area in which I currently reside.
